Wood Ducks

I so seldom see Wood Ducks in my area but when
I visit my daughter in Harrisburg, PA there
is a place that always promises lots of water
fowl.... Wildwood Lake Sanctuary

Stopping off on the way was a happening I could NOT resist.
and am I glad I did. As I started to walk I was seeing
some Canadian geese and then on a small log out
further this gem came into my view finder.
Yippee!! A Male Wood Duck.

He was far enough away that I was no threat and he
moved every which way preening his feathers. click on the
collage below to see all his fancy moves.

Isn't he beautiful?

He started to flap his wings ....

Looking out over the water ...

I thought he was going to fly.... but then looked where
he was looking.

No wonder he was happy.. here comes his mate

She swam right in to where he was

Hopped right up on the other side of the log....

And started her preening as well..

He watched her as she got down to business

Here they both are one on each end of the log

I was very much in heaven being able to see them both
at the same time.
Many people consider it to be the most beautiful of all waterfowl.
Wildwood has reported 8 pairs there this year.

You might want to check out An exciting outing
back in July in Wildwood..It shows the beauty of the Park

They sure are handsome birds and you captured some great pix!
They look as if they've been painted.

I don't think there is another duck as pretty as the Wood Duck. And you captured them just right.

My neighbor sometimes has as many as 85 to 100 Wood Ducks that visit her pond at feeding time. They are absolutely beautiful. I like the way you displayed your pictures.

J,
My absolute favorite duck!! and what a beaut of a post you put together!!
Wonderful photos and you told your story so nicely!!
I always thought Mrs. WD had to be the luckiest duck ever...Her mate is gorgeous ...so surreal looking..almost like he was drawn by Walt Disney!!

This was such a treat for me! I love wood ducks almost as much as I love loons! Your photos were fantastic! It was cute to see them together on the log!

Beautiful birds. We used to live on a lake and they nested in our boxes. Absolutely amazing to see them fly at such high speeds into those boxes.

Great shot of the Wood Duck! They are usually pretty skittish and hard to photograph.

The only good thing about getting so far behind is that there are so many new wonderful photos to look at. No wonder the male wood duck is preening - he;s beautiful. And to have 4 pairs of rose breasted grosbeaks nesting - how exciting...I can only hope that they stop off in the spring on their way through. The sick one is a bit worrisome - all the others seem OK?
And that kingfisher - wow!

How blessed to be able to watch for so long without them flying off. We usually have wood ducks early in the spring when the rain has flooded our valley. I saw some early on but did not have time to take pictures. When I finally was ready to do so, I discovered the geese had taken over....Maybe next year.

Beautiful pictures - I love wood ducks. I can't decide which duck is more striking: harlequin or wood. I love to see them with their mates.
