Red Shouldered Hawk

Red-shouldered Hawk for Craig.

On one of the Jane & Barbie adventures I had the
the privilege of photographing a Red-shouldered Hawk.
Those of you who follow my blog know that Barbie is
Bird Girl and we have been best friends a very long time and
share the hobby of birding. On this day we were in search
of 'Short- eared Owls' but we saw this guy on the way and
pulled over and got him in action.

He certainly wasn't intimidated by our car parked nearby
and our cameras out the windows.

He would drop down by a small body of water and then back up
on the wire. We never did see him catch something, but you had to
give him points for trying. This was my one and only sighting of
a Red-shouldered hawk.

I posted a similar story in April of 08, and if you type in
search 'Red-shouldered hawk' it will bring that up.
There are lots more pictures there.

On the far right you can see him flying (click for closer look)

I'm also interested in old buildings and farms. This building
reminded me of that. So I'm throwing in a couple of those shots.

Later that day we did get Short-eared Owls, I posted that too.
Type in Short-eared owls in the search bar.

Thanks for the post. I do love them hawks! I also have a post of the red shouldered hawk in my "frog legs anyone" post. But he is all growed up. I am still learning how to identify those jouv's. I love that checkered tail on the RSH. Thanks again for the post and visiting my blog.

Jalynn,

I also wanted to say, I love those old buildings and barns too! thanks for sharing those. I lived in Lynchburg Va for a year and I used to love to ride around up in the hills and see all the old homesteads and barns...

Love the pictures. I have never been that close to a hawk before and can't tell one apart from the other so photos help me to study the differences.

I have a thing for old structures too. My father used to paint old barns and buildings so pictures such as yours bring back fond memories. I especially love the last photo.

Love the hawk photos. I have never seen this red-shouldered hawk before so coming here is a first for me.

I am not visiting yet like I did. Just not physically up to it. I am getting better each day.
