Surprise in the Backyard

I love when I look out the kitchen window and there on the tree is a Pileated Woodpecker.  It has only happened 4 times in 40 years.  Thank You Lord for this day!

This happened last January....  haven't seen her since.
A female evident by her black mustache stripe.... males have a red one.
Their food of choice is black ants....probably what she is searching for under the tree bark

Backyard Visitors

Snow and Ice has kept some of the animals and birds from finding food this winter so I put out corn and they all came.

Some people don't like this fella, but I think he is cute with those pink feet and pink nose.

Where there are feeding birds you will likely find a hawk.  This Cooper comes here often.

Of course when the deer can't get to the bare ground they are out there looking and they come to my feeders.

Shenandoah in late May 2015

Coming upon a deer giving birth was the highlight of our morning at Shenandoah National Park
Watching her care for and nurture the new born was a thrill I wont forget.
